Weapons art of the Philippines

More than just sticks

KALI /ESCRIMA is a highly efficient and sophisticated weapons and empty hand system from the Philippines. Kali training develops speed, agility, timing, body mechanics and good co-ordination.

Kali is probably the best known stick and knife fighting art in the world. This martial art uses methods of timing, distance, angles, and rhythm in devastating combination. The emblem at the top of this page is a reminder of this principles. Each attack or counter attack flows with devastating effect into the next. The thing that makes this martial art so effective is it's ability to fight with or without a weapon without any change in the style of movement or technique. If you lose your weapon or get disarmed; your hands, feet, elbows, knees, and forearms can take their place without a pause. This flow allows you to attack your opponent from limb to limb if necessary offering severe destruction causing the inability of your attacker to hold a weapon.

Game of death

Training includes stick against stick as well as empty handed against various weapons including dagger, rattan stick and various combinations of these. Traditionally weapons are taught first and then empty hands. The concepts of Kali / Escrima compliment Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee had shown an interest in Kali in his pet project "Game of Death" he fights his student Dan Insanto using the rattan sticks typical of Kali.
